Sicilian fruits

WATERMELON

The fruit presents several varied shape from spherical to circular, the peel from dark green to whitish and a red pulp inside.

It contains a high quantitative of water, potassium vitamin A and C so as high percentage of sugar, which ensure a pleasant sweet taste.

The fruit is available from May to September. Thanks to its high refreshing power Water Melon is representative of summer season.

FICO D'INDIA (PRICKLY PEAR)

The fruit is a pulpy succulent  berry, with numerous seeds inside and weights between 150 and 400 g .

The variable shape  depends not  only on variety but also on the time of the year it  grows on the plant.

That is why the first ones growing  in August are spherical shaped fruits with reduced size (so called Agostiani) while the latest ones available in autumn are bigger with lengthened   shape, and highly juicy ( so called Bastardon).

The three used cultivar differ for the fruit color, which can be yellow (sulfarina), white  (muscaredda) and red (sanguigna).

Remarkable is the nutrition value of Fico d'India due to the high percentage of important minerals such as calcium (Ca) and potassium plus vitamin C.  

MELON

There are many varieties of melon of which the most important are:  cantaluopensis or cantalupio group of medium dimension, smooth peel and yellow-orange flesh; reticulates or netted melon group, also of medium dimension, with white or yellow-green flesh, and reticulated peel; i nodorous group, winter melon, with whitish or pinky flesh and a  smooth peel.

Melon is a big fruit with variable shape (oval or spherical) and on the surface the longitudinal slices are visible.

The peel is almost smooth or slightly uneven, with the color that can vary from yellow pale to several tones of green.

Melon inside can be from white to orange very perfumed and juicy when ready.

The fibrous core contains many seeds.  

PEARS

The pera coscia of Etna is rich of simple sugars, especially fructose.

Pears ~ Sicilian fruits

  The potassium in it makes this fruit perfect for a low salt diet.

The harvest is between middle July and middle October. The fruit is of medium size with a yellow green colour and some red shading.

Pear is used to make several different kinds of preserves, cakes and salty food.

This highly digestive pear has  good diuretic laxative and refreshing functions.  

PEACHES

Peaches are fleshy fruits, very sweet and perfumed with red yellow or white pulp, with either a thin velvety or smooth peel, yellow red-carmine or salmon, and with a hard stone, that it can be either adherent or loose.

GRAPES

Grapes are the fruits of  vine plant.

The plant makes clusters which structure presents stalk and numerous small acinus of dark or light  colour.

The anthocyan and flavones contained in the grapes determine  the colour and carry out a strong anti- oxidant action.
